Three Democrat governors have pledged to defy President-elect Trump’s proposed efforts to deport illegal aliens. They are Maura Healey of Massachusetts, Gavin Newsom of California, and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois.
Healey stated: “I think that the key here is that every tool in the toolbox has gotta be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents and protect our states, and certainly to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle.”
The irony in her statement is overwhelming. Just how is she upholding the rule of law when she pledges assistance lawbreakers? As for democracy, this governor proposes to thwart a democratically elected president who made immigration law enforcement the centerpiece of his campaign.
Newsom called for a special session of the California legislature to “focus on bolstering California legal resources to protect. . . . immigrant families. On immigrant protection, California has advanced policies that support immigrant families and is investing in their protection.” Since citizens and other legal residents don’t need protection, Newsom obviously is referring to illegal aliens. He said this is necessary to promote “California values.” In his mind, it seems, one of those values is lawlessness.
Pritzeker, however, wins the prize for the most outrageous comment. “To anyone,” he proclaimed, “who intends to come take away the freedom and opportunity and dignity of Illinoisans, I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior. You come for my people, you come through me.” By prioritizing illegal aliens as “his people,” Pritzeker shows a stunning disregard for the law-abiding American citizens of his state. This allegiance raises at least some doubt about his allegiance to his own country.
