Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has blocked legislation, passed by the House, to give Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to visa holders from Hong Kong. Quite commonly TPS, in actual practice, means permanent rather temporary residence.
Cruz charged that House Democrats with this bill “made a cynical decision to try to exploit the crisis in Hong Kong to advance their long-standing goals on changing our immigration laws.” He also maintained that the House legislation would have facilitated movement of Chinese spies into the United States.
