Cornyn Seeks Vote on ‘Parole’

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is seeking a vote in Congress to end the Biden Administration’s “parole” program. His decision follows a federal court ruling to stop it. The administration has stretched the original meaning of parole (admission of foreigners on a carefully selected, one-by-one basis) to become a blanket legalization for large numbers of illegal aliens. In this fashion, the administration can claim to be reducing illegal immigration.

The illegal aliens would be admitted for a period of two years and issued work permits. Given the administration’s record on immigration law enforcement, it is doubtful they would be forced to go home at the end of that term.

Cornyn says the program is bad policy and probably illegal. The vote he seeks will be under the Congressional Review Act. This would allow the measure to pass both chambers of Congress with a simple majority vote. At that point President Biden could veto it, which would require a two-thirds vote to override the veto.

This legislation probably won’t pass, but supporters see it as a useful means to put pressure on the administration to terminate its version of parole.
