Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson had hoped to give Chicago cops a little breathing room by clearing out the thousands of illegal migrants who had been sleeping in their lobbies for the past several months. His plan, oddly titled the “Unity Initiative,” included the construction of two huge “winterized” tents in the city, one in Brighton Park and another on the Far South Side.
As these things tend to go for Northern sanctuary cities (cf NYC’s Eric Adams), Johnson’s plan is not going well. In late November, protesters at the Brighton Park location blocked ten dump trucks the city had assembled to begin construction on the $29-million shelter there.
Then, last Friday, the state’s EPA released an environmental report revealing that much of the soil was contaminated with mercury and other hazardous chemicals, forcing Illinois’s governor, J.B. Pritzker, to halt construction of the shelter.
And then came a protest by a neighborhood black activist group who announced they were suing the mayor for proceeding with the construction with none of the required construction permits.
And then, that was followed on December 2 by a rally at City Hall by black activists, who declared, “We are done with the Democratic Party!”
It’s all very interesting for those of us who remember the Dems’ calamitous 1968 convention and considering the fact that the Democrats will again convene in Chicago next year. At City Hall, one of the protesters declared the following:
This is about our people demanding the resources just as you’ve given these people – these newcomers that walk into this country! How do you take a new group of people that have paid no taxes, can’t vote and you put them in front of the voters! We’re going to show you how we feel about the Democratic National Convention. If you think you’re going to have a peaceful Democratic National Convention in Chicago while our people are starving, stay tuned!
