California Has Highest U.S. Poverty Rate

The Census Bureau reports that California has by far the nation’s highest level of poverty, with nearly a quarter (23.4%) of the state’s 38 million residents (8.9 million) in poverty. The new report uses the Bureau’s “alternative supplemental poverty measure” that takes into account both broader measures of income and the cost of living. Washington, D.C. (22.4%) and Nevada (20%) follow the formerly “Golden State.”
