Brokaw Backs Down on Assimilation

NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw stated on Meet the Press that Hispanic immigrants should work harder to assimilate. These Hispanics, he said, should “not to be just codified in their communities but make sure that all their kids are learning to speak English, and that they feel comfortable in the communities. And that’s going to take outreach on both sides, frankly.”

This comment stirred great outrage among various immigration and ethnic advocates, which caused Brokaw to apologize for what he said. He pleaded, “I feel terrible a part of my comments on Hispanics offended some members of that proud culture. . . .  I’ve worked hard to knock down false stereotypes . . . and the great enduring American tradition of diversity is to be celebrated and cherished.”
