After two years of allowing our southern border to spin out of control, the Biden Administration announced that it is going to do something about the problem with something called “New Border Enforcement Actions.”
Alas, it is no remedy whatsoever. Instead, it is a plan for Biden to bypass the authority of Congress to regulate immigration. Under existing law, the executive branch has authority to grant “humanitarian parole” admittance. This allows admission of foreigners on a case-by-case basis, on grounds of “urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit.”
Biden’s plan would twist this provision by allowing his administration to ignore case-by-case review and grant a blanket pardon to “asylum seekers” (most of whose asylum claims are fraudulent) at ports of entry on the border before admitting them into the U.S. They would enter at a rate of 30,000 a month, for a total of 360,000 a year.
By putting a legal label on these entrants, Biden will be able to claim a 360,000 annual reduction in illegal immigration. But what if they aren’t granted asylum, or don’t show up for their asylum hearings? It’s highly unlikely that the administration will do anything to make them go home.
