The number of illegals benefiting from the government’s much-abused and egregiously mis-named “Temporary Protected Status” program grew by more than 200,000 earlier today.
Officials said, no doubt tongue in cheek, that more than 200,000 Salvadorans could remain “another 18 months.” No one expects them to suddenly be removed automatically at that point, however; TPS is notorious for being extended repeatedly.
Currently, TPS protects about 1.2 million illegals from 17 countries, including Venezuela, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Lebanon. Salvadorans figure prominently among the beneficiaries, having been first covered in 2001 after earthquakes hit the country.
The move is fortunately one of the last remaining available to Joe Biden in his efforts to pack our country with illegal aliens. During his single term, Biden has added Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Ukraine, and Venezuela to the countries whose citizens are available for protection, increasing the total of individual protectees in just four years by 489,700.
Incoming president Donald Trump will theoretically have the power to scale back the program, though his efforts to do so during his first term were hobbled by the courts. We can hope for better results this time around.
