Are Chinese Migrants Colonizing California?

California, for obvious geographical reasons, has always been a favored destination of Asian migrants. As of the 2020 US Census, there were over 6 million Asian-Americans in California, constituting 15.5% of the state’s population. The majority of the Asian population hail from China. San Francisco, for example, is currently 21.4% Chinese, and the numbers and percentages are growing.

So far this fiscal year — which began October 1 — at least 30,000 Chinese migrants have been arrested for illegally crossing the border from Mexico into the US. During all of FY 2023, the number was 24,000, but that was more than in the previous 10 years combined. In FY 2021, when only 342 Chinese were apprehended. So what gives?

No one will say. As we reported here earlier this month, the usual explanation is that the many thousands of Chinese suddenly desirous of coming to America simply want a “better life” economically.

That’s a little odd, when you look at what many are paying to get here. A Chinese family who came across from Mexico in April told the NY Post that they followed a route published on social media that took them from Thailand to Turkey and so on, at an overall cost of $75,000. Other Chinese migrants have reported paying smugglers up to $35,000 per person. In December 2023, an immigration attorney, Erika Pinheiro, who had met with Chinese migrants at the border, told The New York Post:

These migrants tend to have more resources. We have this understanding of asylum seekers as poor and [that] they are only coming to America for economic opportunities, but the people that I’m meeting [at the San Diego, Calif.] border tend to be at least middle class, if not upper-middle class, from their countries.

It would therefore appear that many of the Chinese had been doing fairly well for themselves back in China.

Once in America and having been reliably turned loose by the US Border Patrol, Chinese migrants in particular have an advantage over many other migrants, due to the large number of their co-ethnics already here. The Post reports that, once dropped off by the CBP, Chinese migrants are often met by unofficial “taxis” driven by Chinese men who take them away to pre-arranged housing and meals.

So, are existing US residents of Chinese origin assisting others to help colonize California on behalf of China? It’s hard not to draw that conclusion. Does the Biden administration care? Don’t be ridiculous.
