The man who made Houston a sanctuary city is being elevated to the top spot at Homeland Security.
Ed Gonzalez, sheriff of Harris County, Texas, since 2017, has been named by the White House to head a department he has opposed for years. Gonzalez is an 18-year veteran of the Houston Police, first as a civilian employee and then an officer. He also served three terms on the Houston City Council and was at one time Mayor Pro-Tem. He campaigned for sheriff in 2016 on a promise to withdraw Harris County from a federal partnership that authorizes sheriff’s deputies to enforce immigration laws.
After his election, Gonzalez did just that, turning Harris County and Houston into sanctuaries for illegals.
In 2019, Gonzalez opposed operations by ICE that were locating and marking for deportation more than 2,000 illegal migrants, tweeting at one point:
I do not support ICE raids that threaten to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, the vast majority of whom do not represent a threat to the U.S.
Gonzalez also strongly opposed 2017 state legislation that would prevent cities from banning local law enforcement from asking suspects about their immigration status, claiming the law would take police resources away from other local safety issues. In a letter to the Senate Committee on State Affairs, he wrote:
I am also concerned about the risk of an unintended consequence: creating a climate of fear and suspicion that could damage our efforts to reinforce trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve.
The bill passed anyway and was signed into law by Governor Abbott.
Gonzalez’s appointment to head an office he has clearly and consistently opposed indicates that the slogan “Abolish ICE” remains uppermost in the minds of our leftist rulers in Washington.
