Another TPS Country Canceled

Yesterday, we reported on the cancelation of TPS protection for Somali citizens living illegally in Minnesota and offered the hope that more countries’ illegals would be similarly un-protected from removal.

Today, we got our wish: DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has announced the termination of TPS for Myanmar (nee Burma), to take effect on Jan. 26. About 3,670 Myanmar nationals are currently living under TPS protection in America.

The Biden administration had granted TPS designation to citizens of Myanmar in May 2021 in response to civil disturbances erupting in the country following a Feb. 1, 2021, military coup. In Noem’s announcement, she said “it is safe for Burmese citizens to return home”:

Burma has made notable progress in governance and stability, including the end of its state of emergency, plans for free and fair elections, successful cease-fire agreements and improved local governance contributing to enhanced public service delivery and national reconciliation.

Keep going, Madame Secretary.
