An Editor Ignores the Rule of Law

An AIC Foundation supporter wrote a letter to the Pacific Sun, a newspaper in San Rafael, California. He expressed concern about illegal immigration. He stated that our Founders based a country on the rule of law, which is now being undermined by uncontrolled illegal immigration. He also criticized leaders of the Democratic Party who hope to gain political advantage by granting amnesty to illegal aliens so that they can become citizens and Democratic voters.

To substantiate this charge, our supporter cited the writing of Robert Creamer, a prominent Democratic political consultant who advocates this strategy. Our supporter stated, “Creamer’s position on immigration ‘reform’ is one of bold, in-your-face corruption, abandonment of the principle of law, and a blatant abuse of America’s immigration system.”

To this the editor of the newspaper replied, “Our Founding Fathers and their forebears immigrated to America outside any ‘principles of law.’ And if modern immigrants do the same, and become legal citizens, earning a right to vote—I’m not seeing how this is a bad or a corrupt thing. To suggest, however, that a legitimate reason for opposing the path to citizenship is because they may not vote the way you like seems far more distasteful than Creamer’s position on immigration.”

Fact Check: This country’s Founders (Washington, Jefferson, etc.) were not immigrants. They were born here. And their forebears who arrived in North America were not immigrants either, in that they were not people who moved from one settled society to another. Rather, they were settlers who created a new society in a wilderness.

The society created by the settlers and the Founders grew in liberty and prosperity, thanks in large part to its commitment to the rule of law. To compare them to foreigners who illegally sneak into our country to exploit benefits meant for citizens is ludicrous. And to reward them with citizenship for breaking our laws is truly bad because it corrupts the worth and value of our citizenship.

The editor totally misses the point about voting preferences of amnestied illegal aliens. The issue is not one of liking or disliking those preferences. The issue is the corruption of political leaders who seek to dominate other Americans, whose politics they don’t like, by enlisting foreign lawbreakers as their allies at the polls. Their strategy goes beyond distasteful. Un-American and treasonous are better descriptions.
