Americans Fired, Foreigners Hired

Tech companies often maintain that they need to hire foreign workers because there aren’t enough qualified Americans to do the jobs they want to fill. One of the reasons to doubt this assertion is that it is a common practice for the companies to fire their American  workers and replace them with lower-paid foreigners, typically those with H-1B visas,

Often those Americans face the humiliation of having to train their replacements before they leave. If they refuse to do this, they won’t receive severance pay. Apparently they are qualified enough to provide this training, but not qualified to keep their employment.

To illustrate, Microsoft fired 2,300 employees between May and June in Washington state. Among them were 817 software engineers. At the same time it submitted 6,327 visa requests for software engineers with the same job titles as the laid-off Americans. U.S. Department of Labor data reveal that almost 82 percent of Microsoft’s new workers will receive salaries significantly lower than the median U.S. salaries for the jobs they take.
