Administration Will Reinstate ‘Public Charge’

The Trump administration will reinstate its policy to enforce the ‘public charge’ law. It sets a wealth test for immigrants so that they will not become ‘public charges,’ i.e., recipients of public benefits. This law has rarely been enforced in recent decades.

The administration had to relent on applying the law effectively after a federal court in June ruled against it. Earlier this month, however, another court overturned that ruling.
