Non-Citizens Get More Welfare

Census data for 2024 reveal that 47 percent of households headed by non-citizens with children under six receive welfare benefits from either the WIC or SNAP programs, or both. Sixty-five percent of these recipients are from the “Americas and the Caribbean.” About half are illegal aliens. Although illegals don’t directly qualify for SNAP (food stamps) in most states, they can get them on behalf of their American-born children.

The data also show that households headed by native-born Americans with children under six are significantly less likely to receive WIC or SNAP, or both. Their total is thirty-one percent.

One interesting finding is that laziness is not the reason so many non-citizen households receive these welfare benefits. Most of them have at least one worker. But the jobs they work commonly pay low wages, which entitles them to the benefits. Many employers like to hire immigrants, particularly illegals, as a means to keep wages down and enhance their profits.

As a consequence, taxpayers are having to subsidize the employers’ low-wage agenda. Without so many immigrants, employers would have to increase salaries.
