Trump Will Cut Refugees

The New York Times reports that the Trump Administration is planning to slash refugee admissions. The Biden Administration set a cap of 125,000 refugees for last year, and 100,000 were admitted in fiscal 2024. According to a “presidential determination, cited by the Times, President Trump aims to cut the ceiling down to 7,500. Most of these slots, says the Times, will go to white Afrikaners from South Africa and others the administration deems to be facing “unjust discrimination.”

Refugees and asylum seekers are supposed to be people who are facing political persecution because of their ethnicity, religion, and political beliefs. Mass immigration advocates, however, have tried in recent decades to expand the definition of refugees and asylum seekers to include just about everyone–for any reason–who is dissatisfied with his home country.
