Illegals Burden Florida Hospitals

Last year Florida passed a law calling for hospitals to assess the amount of health care they provide to illegal aliens. The law required them to ask patients about their immigration status. Even though the patients didn’t have to answer, records show a 54 percent decline  in Medicaid billings for illegals since passage of the law.

The remaining billings, however, were still significant. In 2024, according to Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), illegal aliens made 67,700 emergency room visits to Florida hospitals, which cost a total of $660 million.

A spokesperson for the AHCA observed that “The data confirms that the financial burden of illegal immigration continues to strain Florida’s healthcare system. We will continue working to ensure that hospitals and healthcare providers deliver quality services to U.S. citizens.”
