The government of the state of Maine seems unable to understand where it’s going wrong vis-a-vis immigration. The state has 176,000 students in public schools. It spends on average $15,000 on each and every one every year, a thousand dollars more than the national average. Yet Maine’s students are near the bottom of test score standings when compared to the rest of the country (ranked at 38th). Only 33 percent of fourth-graders in Maine are proficient in math, and only 26 percent in reading.
What’s wrong? Breitbart News says Maine has suffered a “tidal wave” of immigration in recent years, much of it illegal. During the last decade, for example, 70 percent of Portland’s school students needed remedial help in English. Throughout the Portland system, a total of 57 languages are spoken in its classrooms. City officials are considering requiring new teachers to be multi-lingual, rendering large numbers of potential recruits unqualified.
Yet the people who run things in Maine appear oblivious. Its governor, Janet Mills, has set a goal of welcoming 75,000 “New Mainers” by 2029. You can guess where they’ll come from.
