The Trump administration made news the other day when it deported 104 Indian nationals who had been living illegally in the United States. We reported at that time that India is the third biggest source of illegal migrants to the US, behind only Mexico and El Salvador. Yet, the real impact of India on American society and economy is not border-jumpers or visa overstayers: it’s the entirely legal variety, which makes use of a variety of special visas and other means of securing the privilege and working in America.
The deliberate mass infiltration of Indian workers into this country is an offical policy of the Indian government, though it takes pains to keep that as secret as possible from the American people. The calculated transfer of Indian citizens over the past several decades has resulted in the addition of at least four million Indians to the US. Since 1990, that transfer has displaced millions of American graduates and transformed the management and staff of dozens of American high-tech companies. In addition, it has created a massive transfer of money in the form of remittances to the tune of $100 billion per year — money that India then uses to buy weapons, energy, and food.
How does India’s government keep all this on the relative QT? By speaking openly at home and guardedly abroad. This week, for example, Prime Minister Modi has been visiting Washington and has seemed all too eager to speak of “cooperation” and “Make India Great Again,” but to carefully avoid discussions of immigration and H1-Bs.
Breitbart quotes a number of news outlets who seem to have been taken in by the strategy:
Washington Post: “New Delhi hopes cooperating on illegal migration will help ensure the coveted H-1B visa program for high-skilled foreign workers, the vast majority of whom are Indian, will be spared from Trump’s immigration crackdown. Trump has said he supports the program, which is opposed by many of his far-right supporters.
Associated Press: “Modi and Trump were also set to discuss immigration, and Modi can point to India’s having accepted the return of 104 migrants brought back on a U.S. military plane — the first such flight to the country as part of the Trump dministration’s crackdown on immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border.”
Reuters: “Ahead of his White House meeting on Thursday, Modi has readied promises including increased liquefied natural gas, combat vehicle and jet engine purchases, according to Indian government officials who declined to be named.…
“Trump wants more assistance from India on unauthorized immigration. The country is a major source of immigrants to the United States, including a large number in the tech industry on work visas and others in the U.S. illegally.
India’s policy is India First. We should take heed.
