After President-elect Donald Trump endorsed H-1B visas, a reporter asked him why he changed his mind on this program which allows U.S. tech companies to import foreign workers. Trump answered, ‘I didn’t change my mind. I’ve always felt we have to have the most competent people in our country.’ The reporter replied, “But sir, you changed your position.” Trump didn’t respond.
The reporter was correct. The president-elect in the past has taken stands in word and deed against the H-1B visa system. In a 2016 primary debate he stated that the visas were “unfair” to American workers. He added that “I think and I know the H-1B very well. And it’s something that I frankly use, and I shouldn’t be allowed to use it. We shouldn’t have it.” In 2020 he proposed a sharp reduction in H-1Bs.
What may have changed his mind? One reason, many speculate, is the influence of tech mogul Elon Musk who strongly supports the program and wants to expand it. Musk contributed $250 million to Trump’s presidential campaign.
