VA Gov: Cut Funds to Sanctuaries

Gov. Glenn Younkin of Virginia has proposed a budget which would cut off law enforcement funding to “sanctuary” cities and counties, i.e., those which refuse to cooperate with efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport illegal aliens. He said this should send a warning to local governments that “pander to pro-illegal immigrant groups.”

His announcement follows the arrest of an illegal alien from Honduras for sexual assault. The crime occurred in Fairfax County which has a sanctuary policy. The accused alien had been arrested previously for other crimes. If he had been deported then, say critics of  sanctuary, the more recent crime might not have happened.

Gov. Younkin affirmed that “Criminals who are in the United States illegally will be turned over to ICE. We must stop the cycle of violence and crime that is being enabled by some local governments. Virginia is not a sanctuary state, and we must be clear that we will not allow localities to become ‘sanctuary cities.'”
