Are Haitian Migrants Eating Pets?

Donald Trump says, Yes, illegal Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, are indeed feasting on local cats and dogs. Though there is plenty of evidence to back up the claim, local and state officials deny the accounts. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (Rep.), for example, has insisted there is “no credible evidence” to the claims, which have nevertheless been echoed by numerous local citizens. He says he chooses to believe the local officials:

I think we should take the word of the city manager and the mayor that they have found no credible evidence of that story, of Haitians eating pets. . . .

One of those officials, City Manager Bryan Heck, in a boosterist speech that might have been written by the Chamber of Commerce, gushed that the recent growth in the workforce was “diverse and robust” and claimed that the influx of the migrants was leading the community into a virtual economic utopia.

Mayor Rob Rue, for his part, told a press conference that the rumors of pets or wildlife being eaten by Haitian immigrants were “absolutely false” and that local police had received no complaints of Haitian immigrants squatting or littering in front of people’s homes. (Maybe the local constabulary should attend city commission meetings, where such complaints have most definitely been reported.)

Finally, it is interesting to note that nothing-to-see-here Republican Gov. DeWine has a long-time interest in Haiti, having visited the place more than 20 times over the years since founding, along with his wife, the “Hands Together Becky DeWine School” there. Unfortunately, that school was forced to close in March by the country’s ongoing violence. “The gangs really control today a great deal of Haiti,” DeWine said at the time. He might have added, “So let’s bring them here.”
