Former President Trump dismayed many of his supporters by stating at a press conference in Bedminster, New Jersey, that our country should admit “a lot of” immigrants. They are necessary, the former president claimed, “because [the US] need[s] more people – especially AI coming and all [these] different things. . . . “but we’re going to make sure they’re not murderers, killers, drug dealers, and the kind of people we have largely coming in right now.”
It seems strange that we would need a lot more immigrants when we already have around fifty million of them here already, or expressed another way, one out of every seven residents. Also odd is Trump’s reference to AI as a reason for more immigration, when virtually all forecasters predict that AI will eliminate a great many jobs now being done by people.
Trump’s comments in New Jersey seem to diverge from some of his past statements and some of his policies as president. One explanation is his unfortunate habit of “shooting from the lip” without thinking through what he is saying.
