How the Government and UN Finance Illegal Migration

Both the federal government and the United Nations funnel millions of dollars to illegal migrants through various nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), often those with names suggesting religious themes, though they are funded by the most secular of sources. Some of the government agencies most involved in financing these organizations are the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Health and Human Services (HHS). The NGOs benefitting from these agencies’ largesse include:

Catholic Charities USA, received $1.4 billion in government support in 2022, compared with $1 billion received from private donations. The Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service received more than $93.1 million in U.S. government grants in 2021; taxpayer-funded grants accounted for more than 80% of its total support. HIAS, formerly known by the full title of Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, received more than $23 million from the Health and Human Services, over $59 million from the State Department, and more than $10 million from the Homeland Security. About half of HIAS’s revenue in 2022 came from the federal government in 2022.

The United Nations, through its International Organization for Migration (IOM), also distributes cash payments and other freebies to migrants. A UN document entitled “Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan” explains how it works, showing how the group lavishes hundreds of millions of dollars on incoming migrants by national origin. For example, $1.6 billion is currently allocated for 17 Latin American countries. Given that the US is the primary financial contributor to the UN, providing 22 percent of its annual budget, that means that US taxpayers contribute at least $352 million per year to the IOM. Much of the money comes from the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration and the US Agency for International Development.

Meanwhile, American citizens are suffering twice-over: they are forced to pay for the migrants to come, then have to endure the problems caused by them once they are here, including increased crime, wage depression, housing shortages, and overall increases in the cost of all services. When tempted to contribute to these “faith-based” outfits, ask yourself where your donation will end up and to what purpose.
