Negative View of Immigration Increases

Polling by Economist/YouGov of U.S. adults during the past two years shows a shift of sentiment against immigration. In 2022, the poll asked “In general, do you think immigration makes the U.S. better off or worse off, or does it not make much difference?”

Thirty-one percent said “better off,” 35 percent said “worse off.” The option of “not much difference” was chosen by 22 percent. Twelve percent had no opinion.

The latest Economist/YouGov, done this month, found that “better off” only increased by one point to 32 percent. In contrast, respondents saying “worse off” rose by seven points to 42 percent. Perhaps reflecting a greater polarization over the issue of immigration, “not much difference” declined to 16 percent and “no opinion” to 10 percent.
