Immigrants Get Most New Jobs

The New York Times recently stated that we have a “historically strong” job market. The problem is that it is not so strong for native-born Americans. Since 2019, Two-thirds of employment growth has gone to legal and illegal immigrants. A study by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) notes that “The government’s household survey shows that there were only 971,000 more U.S.-born Americans employed in May 2024 compared to May 2019 prior to the pandemic, while the number of employed immigrants has increased by 3.2 million.”

Currently we have a low unemployment rate, which immigration activists cite as a reason for immigrants to fill job openings. They neglect to note, however, that we have a large number of American men of working age who are not employed and are not counted in the official unemployment figures. Their numbers have increased in recent decades.

Low wages and competition from immigration have influenced many of these men, particularly those without college degrees, to leave the workforce. CIS maintains that our society should aim to bring them into employment, rather than continuing to flood our labor markers with immigrants.
