House Will Vote on Border Bill

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) says that H.R. 29 will come up for a vote in the House. This measure would require authorities either to expel or detain illegal aliens apprehended at the border. Currently, many of these border crossers are released into the U.S. with their promise that they will show up for hearings.

The Florida congressman said he received word from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that the House would vote on the measure in May. Gaetz observed that “The basic premise of the bill is detain or turn away. And it’s our belief that if we did that for a while, the cartels would get the message. And there wouldn’t be folks paying between $7,000 and $70,000 to be moved through Mexico. . . .”
