Biden: Promote “Balanced” Public Narratives on Migrants

The White House has issued a “Fact Sheet” detailing the results of that “Three Amigos” meeting in Mexico City last week that featured Biden, Trudeau, and Lopez Obrador. The British tabloid Daily Mail, in response, has broken down those “key deliverables” in an online article titled “Biden to announce plans to combat ‘xenophobia’ and ‘discrimination’ of migrants coming to US. . . .

It was that part about combatting “xenophobia” and “discrimination” that caught our eye. Those are, of course, time-honored code words the open-borders crowd resorts to anytime anyone suggests that maybe we have too many foreign nationals flooding into our country.

The specific bullet in the Fact Sheet’s list of deliverables reads this way:

  • Countering xenophobia and discrimination against migrants and refugees by promoting balanced public narratives on migrants and refugees to support their meaningful inclusion in the region. [Emphasis added]

What, specifically, does the administration mean by “promoting balanced public narratives”? Undoubtedly, the word “balanced” here functions in much the same way as another of the left’s buzzwords: “dialogue.” When leftists speak of the need for a dialogue, they are actually calling for a single, authoritarian announcement that cannot be questioned. Likewise, when they demand that a narrative be balanced, they actually mean one that presents their side only.

The Amigos appear to have borrowed the phrase from a United Nations campaign called “It Takes a Community (ITAC),” which was launched in 2021 and is implemented by the International Organization for Migration. Interestingly, given Prime Minister Trudeau’s involvement in the Mexico City summit, the campaign seems to have originated in Canada, which is promoting it globally. According to the ITAC website, to participate, private individuals are encouraged to sign and submit a formal pledge, to wit:

I pledge to…

      • Speak up about the positive contributions of migrants and refugees in my community and beyond.
      • Engage with my friends, family and community about the importance of inclusion.

In addition, supporters are counseled to use the campaign’s inevitable hashtag: #ItTakesACommunity and to “promote ITAC to your country’s domestic audiences like local governments, business, civil society groups, or youth-led organizations, to help grow the campaign and engage more people in speaking up about the importance of creating inclusive communities.”

This rubbish is a call for the lockstep Wokesters in the Twitterverse to carry the administration’s water. The rationale, as ITAC says, is that “People are far more likely to listen to those in their own networks – not government messaging.” It is actually a kind of “message laundering,” where “private” individuals and groups are encouraged to simply parrot the government’s talking points. Don’t be fooled.
