New York City Mayor Eric Adams traveled to the border city of El Paso, Texas, on Sunday. While there he declared, “There is no room in New York” for illegal migrants, in spite of his and other city leaders’ chronic boasts of NYC being a “sanctuary” for illegals.
Since last year, numerous busloads of migrants have been sent to New York and other cities by various governmental entities, some Republican, some Democrat. The Republican governors of Texas and Arizona have sent some, but so have the Democrat-led cities of El Paso and Denver.
Adams wants no more of it, but at least he did not diminish the problem faced by El Paso and other border cities. He claimed that he saw the first evidence of the crisis in El Paso immediately upon landing at the airport, where large numbers of migrants were seen waiting for a chance to board outbound planes. He also described seeing migrants sleeping on the streets of the city and concluded:
What El Paso is going through, and all the other municipalities. We need a real leadership moment from FEMA. This is a national crisis.
Adams also believes those impacted municipalities, including his own city, should be reimbursed by the federal government for their migrant-related expenses. The mayor now believes that, due to the estimated 40,000+ migrants who have arrived in New York since last April, the city is entitled to a two-billion-dollar grant from Washington–an increase of one billion dollars from his previous estimates last year.
The mayor promised to bring up the subject of illegal migrants at the American Conference of Mayors meeting in Washington this week. Unfortunately, it appears his efforts will not be to reduce the numbers of illegals, but to–as he told a crowd outside an El Paso church– “fight so that you can experience the American dream.”
“Fighting,” in this case and as usual, means demanding more taxpayers’ money.
