An anonymous source within the Customs and Border Protection agency has told Breitbart News that the number of illegal migrants escaping apprehension so far this fiscal year has reached 200,000. In addition, more than 45,000 of them have avoided capture within the last 30 days. In all of FY 2020, there were an estimated 69,000 of such “got-aways.”
Officials arrive at these estimates by first counting illegal immigrants who have been observed by aircraft platforms and camera systems but who ultimately escape apprehension. Border Patrol agents then use traditional techniques to identify footprints crossing the border and count those that elude apprehension.
These techniques are less than foolproof and usually result in estimates lower than the actual numbers.
Officials note that the Border Patrol’s need to provide humanitarian assistance to families and unaccompanied minors has resulted in fewer routine patrols and has added to the numbers of migrants getting through.
