US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced that nearly 500 illegal aliens–already in custody for non-immigration-related crimes–have been released from North Carolina jails in spite of ICE requests otherwise.
ICE had filed “detainers”–requests that the inmates be held–for the 489 inmates, which were ignored by the liberal cities and counties involved.
Foremost among the pro-illegal counties is Mecklenburg–home county of the state’s largest city, Charlotte. Mecklenburg Sheriff Garry McFadden had announced earlier this year that he would not honor such ICE requests. One of the inmates released under ICE’s protest, Oscar Pacheco-Leonardo, 33, a Honduran national, was re-arrested last month by ICE on charges of rape and child sex offenses. Pacheco-Leonardo had been released from McFadden’s custody just two months earlier, where he had been held for first-degree rape and indecent liberties with a minor. He had previously been deported back to Honduras in 2006.
McFadden held a news conference on September 9 where he again defended his refusal to honor ICE detainers, in spite of cases such as Pacheco-Leonardo’s.
According to his website, Sheriff McFadden is a “community leader” and recipient of a number of awards, including in 2015 having been “Recognized by President Obama – 21st Century Policing Initiative Community.” He campaigned in 2018 on a pledge of non-cooperation with ICE requests.
