250K Got-Aways in FY 2021

On a daily basis we report here about those illegal migrants who are apprehended during or shortly after they have illegally crossed into the United States. Those numbers are huge. But for every illegal who is nabbed, how many “get away”?

The answer of course is, no one knows. Those figures have to be estimated, says Border Patrol veteran Randy Clark writing in Breitbart News, by “counting illegal immigrants who ultimately escape apprehension after being observed by aircraft and camera systems” and through “traditional sign-cutting techniques to spot footprints.” The process is imprecise and tends to result in under-counts. Nevertheless, it’s the best we can do, and even the likely under-counts are stunning.

A CBP official, speaking off the record, has told Breitbart the agency estimates that by June 13 of this fiscal year, which began in October 2020, fully 250,000 illegals had successfully evaded capture and entered the U.S. On average, 1,600 migrants avoid capture every day, and 50,000 have made it through over the last 30 days. These numbers contrast with those of FY 2020, when the estimated number of got-aways was 69,000–not a small number but not a quarter million either.

Clark suggests that the diversion of Border Patrol agents from enforcement to humanitarian work has likely contributed to the surge in got-aways.
