The numbers are in, if still unofficially, of illegal migrants “encountered” by the Border Patrol in the just-ended fiscal year 2021. According to leaked documents from the CBP, nearly 2 million (1.96) illegals were encountered by border officials from October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021. That represents an increase of 202 percent over the previous year’s 647,000. The lion’s share of the encounters (1.6 million) occurred during the nine-month-old Biden administration.
Most of the illegals encountered hail from Mexico, followed by the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. Officials report that overall, however, persons from over 150 countries around the world were apprehended.
The 1.96-million figure does not include the estimated 400,000 “got-aways”–illegals who avoided capture and escaped into the United States.
What was the fate of those who were apprehended? The report cited doesn’t provide that information, but a separate report, also leaked anonymously, shows that since March at least 160,000 have been released into the U.S. Of those:
- 94,570 were released with Notices to Report–requests that they check in with an ICE office when they get to wherever they end up in the U.S.
- At least 32,000 immigrants have been released via parole, a hitherto little-used practice that the Biden administration has seized upon, in processing Afghanis in particular. Many of those “refugees” are still at U.S. military installations but are expected to eventually total at least 95,000. Parole comes with eligibility for work permits and is considered a path toward citizenship.
- Finally, the administration has recently begun releasing illegals on their own recognizance. At least 40,000 such releases have occurred during the past two months. That’s how the government ended up depopulating the “Bidenville” encampment at Del Rio, Texas, not by deportations to Haiti, which at most removed only a few thousand.
Overall, the illegals keep coming. July and August each saw 200,000, the highest totals in decades. And, increasingly, our inept and criminally negligent government simply turns them loose. So it goes.
