Rep. Maria Salazar (R-FL) and at least nine other Republican members of the House, along with about 10 Democrats, are pushing a bill that would grant amnesties to illegals. Called the “Dignity” bill, the law, if enacted, would “give dignity to undocumented immigrants,” which means they would be protected from deportation, be granted full work authorization, and guaranteed the right to remain in the U.S. indefinitely. In return, they would be required to pass a criminal background check, repay back taxes, and start paying income taxes. The program would not, they say, provide a path to citizenship.
As Neil Munro of Breitbart News explains,
Salazar’s push for a low-pay, high-migration economy would be good for her donors in the nation’s real estate and consumer economies, including donors who sell used autos to poor migrants.
Other Republican backers of the act would likewise benefit politically from its passage. One, for instance, is Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), who owns orchards that rely on farm labor. Another is Rep. David Valadao (R-CA), whose district is in California’s Central] Valley, “where there are many people who have lived and worked peacefully [and illegally] for years, and they deserve a fair opportunity to earn legal status.”
Joining the Repulicans are at least 10 Democrats, including “ethnic politicians Veronica Escobar (D-TX), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), and Salud Carbajal (D-CA), and self-claimed moderates, such as Jake Auchincloss (D-MA).”
Other Republicans are pushing back on the bill as — in Muno’s words — “a wage-cutting, coalition-breaking giveaway to ethnic and business lobbies.” Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) said: “We need deportations, not amnesty.
The Project for Immigration Reform said:
The key to understanding María Salazar’s push for amnesty and expanded immigration is recognizing her underlying motive: to accelerate the Latinization of the United States. Her long-term goal appears to be cultivating a larger Spanish-speaking population, which would ultimately serve her media ambitions once she returns to Spanish-language broadcasting after her time in Congress.
