Phony Asylum Claims Fuel Illegal Surge at Border

Nearly one in ten illegals crossing the southern border now claim asylum, using “magic words” to claim they fear their home country and turning a law meant to be a humanitarian lifeline into another path for illegal economic migrants.

Lax Obama administration policies have caused a major change over just the last five years, enticing ever-more migrants to exploit the loophole.  In 2010, less than 1% of aliens at the border requested asylum, now it’s 9% and growing.  The percentage is far higher for Central Americans, Haitians and virtually all except Mexicans.

Most claims for asylum are eventually rejected, and the alien is then supposed to be deported.  But because of a 2009 Obama administration policy change, the government no longer holds them while their cases are proceeding, allowing the aliens to disappear into the vast alien underworld in the U.S.

The illegals are being coached by friends and family or smugglers, who collect thousands of dollars per person for their efforts, on the “magic words” to put them on the asylum track, border officials say. The Mexican drug cartels control most of the human smuggling and have learned how to game the U.S. system to increase their smuggling success rate and profits.

In 2012, just 8,147 illegals asked for asylum.  That grew to 28,793 in 2014.  Just through the first 10 months of 2016 it has reached a staggering 46,628.

Congressional Republicans say the Obama 2009 policy change freeing asylum claimants is contrary to the intent of the law and could be reversed by the Trump administration.
