Arrests of illegal aliens sneaking across the Mexican border dropped sharply in March to 12,500, the lowest monthly figure in seventeen years. Secretary John Kelly of Homeland Security said that the decline was “no accident” but a consequence of President Trump’s stated plans to thwart illegal immigration. Border control advocates caution, however, that many people who would like to come illegally are waiting to see if Trump will carry out his promises. If not, they warn, the flow of illegal immigration across the border most likely will pick up again.
