Residents of Chino Hills, California, protested at a maternity center where Chinese mothers are giving birth so that their children can become U.S. citizens. Under current interpretation of U.S. law, anyone born on U.S. soil is automatically a citizen. The mothers are paying thousands of dollars to give birth at the center. The protestors described the commerce at the clinic as “birth tourism.” When the child citizens are grown, they can petition bring in parents and other relatives.
