House Passes TPS

With the support of all Democrats and thirty-nine Republicans, the House passed a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans in the U.S. The purpose of TPS is to give foreigners a haven in this country until difficult conditions in their home countries subside.  But in practice, few TPS recipients ever go home.  The program is a de facto amnesty.  The Republicans who supported the bill were lobbied to do so by the Chamber of Commerce, a long-time supporter of legislation to provide cheap labor for business.
